Together with a series of professionals, we will consider three case studies on how the engineering industry has adjusted to different workplace challenges in 2020.
The case studies will be presented from three different perspectives – a young engineer (YEA), a female engineer (WiE) and an engineering leader (CLM.) The speakers will delve into the ways in which they leverage their communication, creative thinking and management skills to tackle the ongoing changes. They will reflect on the lessons learnt and ways in which they could have tackled the challenges differently with the benefit of hindsight.
Sarah Hughes will discuss the challenges and impact on team management and project delivery. This will include the challenges in consulting but also the positive impact of government economic stimulus, the new norm in the consultancy workplace and the positive outcomes including technology upskill and an increase in flexible work.
Eric Bardy will discuss the challenges and impact on operating (infrastructure) assets that cross the South Australian and Victorian borders. This will include the importance of maintaining effective cross border government relations, risk management, managing remote based teams and what 2021 might now look like for a large infrastructure company.
Scott Snedden will discuss the challenges of ceasing employment with a large multinational consultancy to set up a new consulting firm during unprecedented times.
Post case studies, there will be a moderated panel discussion with the speakers.
About the Speakers
Sarah Hughes | Team Manager, Water, South Australia, WSP
Sarah Hughes is the South Australian Water Team Manager at WSP. She is a Civil and Environmental Engineer and an experienced design manager, having delivered a range of water, wastewater, stormwater and recycled water projects for SA Water and other clients across South Australia. Sarah’s passion is delivering projects that will benefit the community and she also enjoys challenging the status quo and those around her to create an environment that promotes diversity and inclusion.
Eric Bardy | Head of Operations, SEA Gas
Eric Bardy is responsible for the commercial and physical operational performance of the SEA Gas assets. He leads the pipeline system control, maintenance, reliability, commercial operations, contract management and landholder liaison functions, with a focus on meeting customer expectations. Eric joined SEA Gas in September 2016 after 25 years’ experience in engineering, maintenance and operations in both upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors, including over 10 years’ experience in senior management roles.
