Learn about engineering internships and how they can benefit your organisation from Greg Stevens, General Manager, Innovation & Aerospace at Toolcraft Australia Pty Ltd. Greg's intern was Freyja Leinonen.

What is your favourite story/memory about this internship?

Despite studying a different discipline, in mechanical engineering, Freyja had the confidence to challenge the electrical engineers about the safety of the company's power system prototype, which prompted several design improvements and resulted in a test facility upgrade.

Does your organisation run a structured internship program at regular intervals, or is it more ad hoc based on business requirements?

Semi-structured; Toolcraft runs Department of Defence sponsored internships over the summer and university / third-party internships throughout the year.

Were you directly involved with the supervision of the student on placement?

I supervised Freyja, however my preference is for the Intern to work autonomously to a brief, and to batch their questions for a discussion just before COB whereby we can run through a plan for the following day.

How did you advertise the internship opportunity?

Through the university system.

Why did you select this particular student for the internship opportunity?

Freyja is: motivated, honest and local.

Does your organisation run a structured internship program at regular intervals, or is it more ad hoc based on business requirements?

What form of support did you receive from the student’s university?

They insured the student.
