The YEA National Case Competition 2021 has just come to an end, with the competition a way for Engineers Australia to support our student members who may be finding things difficult at the moment with the Covid-19 restrictions currently in place around the country. We wanted to make sure they still had the opportunity to interact with others, build their networks, learn new skills and most importantly, have fun.

Pursuing a passion for teaching children about the fun of engineering, Sophiya Patel established the Docklands Code Club in partnership with the Library at the Dock in Melbourne in 2016.

Establishing the club required Patel to take on the role of lead facilitator and organiser.

“Coding is key to how our digital world will work,” she said.

“Though we are unlikely to see the immediate benefits to running such clubs, it is making the children ready to tackle the problems of the future.”

The last two months have been a challenging time for everyone, including international students - some of whom are struggling to meet their living expenses whilst also not being eligible for existing government payments. Given the global impact of COVID-19 many families and funding sources from students' home countries have also been impacted.

Fortunately, a number of state governments have announced new avenues to support students who are facing hardship in these uncertain times.
