This presentation will commence with an exploration of the phrase 'knowledge is power’; where it came from and what was meant by it when it was reportedly penned in 1597 by Francis Bacon. This will be followed by a discussion of what it has come to mean today; and how it influences the way we use our knowledge at work.
To generalise, there are two main ways people use their knowledge at work; some people primarily use their knowledge to establish and maintain positions of power and influence, whilst other people primarily shared their knowledge. They use it to empower and help educate others. That is their ‘M-O’.
Organisations need both, however, organisations need more people that share their knowledge so that others are empowered and educated in an ongoing way.
James will share some practical methods and tools for how to identify your strengths, which underpin your knowledge and explore how to share your knowledge at work, so that you can confidently grow your professional reputation, so you are able to:
- make a positive difference at work; a difference that you are proud of
- educate others; in a way that empowers people and helps them to be excited about learning
- learn from others, with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Why? So that collaboration can increase in the organisation. Organisations that support collaborative, learning cultures are generally characterised by better performance, happier staff and all the benefits that these things bring. In addition to this, their relationships with external stakeholders can be more positive and productive. The cultures within organisations tend to be reflected in the relationships they have with external stakeholders.
Organisations that have achieved this will be explored and you will be encouraged to create a personal development to-do list to help you clarify your strengths; share your strengths and engage with each other collaboratively.

- Combine all the above to enable more collaboration within the workplace that can have a positive effect on internal and external stakeholder relationships.

About the speaker

James is an experienced professional. He has worked in the research sector, the Australian Public Service and the private sector: collaborating, presenting and facilitating learning. He approaches his work with an enthusiasm and passion that positively influences colleagues and clients. Since 2000, he has had successful careers in: insect research (published and spoken nationally and internationally); federal government policy, team management, innovation and training/facilitation; private sector consulting and adult education: training and facilitation. James now specialises in adult education and facilitation in human skills. James coaches’ individuals in career strategy and change, assists teams develop practical preferred futures, facilitates meetings and collaboration events and guides professionals to become accomplished public speakers, and facilitators.
